Architecture and structure of Tehran market

Before entering into the discussion of Tehran Bazaar architecture, it is not bad to have a brief look at the market structure in general. In general, the main structural elements of the market are:

  • Rasteh or main passage of bazaar which is a long way and on both sides of which are shops.
  • Saraa which is a middle courtyard with interconnected cells around it. Halls differ in the shape of floor, the number of floors, the type of porch, and corridors.
  • Timcheh which are small indoor spaces for the supply of a particular type of product and have significant decorations compared to other market segments.
  • Charsooq or Chaharsoo or Chaharsooq is the intersection of two main rows that have different architecture and detailed interior decorations.
Grand bazaar architecture

Tehran Bazaar, like any other Iranian bazaars, is a collection of winding corridors, multiplicative arches, domes, etc., each of which has been built with great care. It is true that this market has changed a lot over time, but its old parts are still intact and have many beauties. The old parts of the bazaar are built in the form of arches and domes, and the holes and openings between the domes provide the light of the interior space. These vents also act as ventilators for the market and cause air circulation.

Details in structure of the market show that the architecture and designer of this space was not awkward, and foreign architects or skilled domestic masters were involved. Since the architecture of the market is not specific to one period and has been formed during different periods, it is not possible to consider an exact style for it; But most of it has signs of Tehranian architectural style.

grand bazaar architecture and art

This space has expanded and developed over time and has undergone many changes, and the new and reconstructed parts of the architecture do not have significant architecture. At one time, parts of the bazaar were roofed due to the summer heat, and at other times, service spaces such as coffee houses, Zurkhanehs, baths, mosques, Saqqa Khane, and many Hussainiya were formed. Rows were added to the market one by one, each dedicated to selling private goods. Each of these sections had its own reliance, mosque, baths, and special programs, and at festivals and mourning ceremonies, they compete with other sections in ceremonies to attract people’s attention.
