Damavand mountain
Damavand Mountain is the highest peak not only in Iran but also in the Middle East. It is 5671 meters high. This Mountain is volcanic, and specialists announce Damavand Mountain as the second highest volcanic mountain in the Asia after Kunlun Volcanic Group in Tibet. Moreover it is the 12th prominent peak in the world and second in Asia after Everest. This mount is located in the middle of Alborz. It is near the southern coast of Caspian Sea in Mazandaran Province. It is about 66 km from the capital of Iran, Tehran to reach the place.
Unfortunately the origin of Damavand is not clear, but some researchers believe that because of being volcanic, Damavand means ashes and smoke. During the centuries, it has been appreciated among Iranians, poets, and specialists. Folklore believe that it is symbol of Iranian resistance against despotism and foreign rules. Based on this belief poets and writers create various masterpieces about Iran’s situation and Damavand.
Damavand Firstly erupted nearly 1.78 million years ago in Pleistocene. After that next eruption happened in 600,000 and 280,000 years ago. And the last eruption happened in Holocene in 5300 BC. There are hot springs, fumaroles, and mineral deposits of travertine close to this mountain. Due to these phenomena volcano specialists know Damavand as an active volcano.
As mentioned above, there are hot pleasant springs around this mountain for soaking. The water of these springs is useful for skin and wounds. In addition there is a good ski resort in Abali for those who enjoy skiing, and for those who like to hike this mountain. Firstly they should go to Polar Mountain Complex built by Iran Mountaineering Federation. Climbing season is from June to September, or May to October for experienced climbers.
